How to Make Cookie Cutter Bird Feeders

I know your time is precious, so let’s get right to it!  You only need a few frugal ingredients to make cookie cutter bird feeders.  After you gather all your supplies, assemble the kids in your kitchen and get to work!

Bird Feeder Supplies | Frugal Fun Mom

Cookie Cutter Bird Feeder Supplies Needed:

  • 1 box of Unflavored Gelatin (4 – 0.25 pouches)
  • 4 cups of Small Bird Seed
  • 1 & 1/4cup of Water
  • Wax Paper or Parchment Paper
  • Twine
  • Metal Cookie Cutters – Any Shapes

Directions To Make Cookie Cutter Bird Feeders:

Dissolve Gelatin | Frugal Fun Mom

Start With Gelatin:

Add all 4 packets of unflavored gelatin to the water in a medium sized sauce pan.  Whisk until well dissolved and bring to a boil.  Stir continuously while you wait for it to boil.  Once it boils remove from heat and let is sit for 2 minutes.

While you let the gelatin cool, add a sheet of wax paper to a metal 9x 13 pan.  Place a bunch of the cookie cutters on the wax paper.  Pull off few small sheets of wax paper, one for each child you have helping.

Add Bird Seed:

Add all of the bird seed to the gelatin mixture in the pan.  Stir until all the bird seed is well coated with the gelatin.

Using a spoon, have your kids scoop the bird seed mixture to the cookie cutters.  Using the extra sheet of wax paper, press the bird seed mixture into the cookie cutters so they make a tight fit.

Make Holes With A Straw:

Bird Feeders | Frugal Fun Mom

After you have used all the bird seed and filled all your cookie cutters, using a straw, make a hole in each cookie cutter for the twine.  Make sure the hole goes all the way through you can string your twine through each cookie cutter.

Freezer Time:

After you have all the holes set, place the entire pan into the freezer and freeze for 30 minutes.  While you are waiting for your cookie cutter bird feeders to freeze, have your kids help you clean up the kitchen!

After 30 minutes remove the pans from the freezer and let them sit for at least 15 minutes and come to room temperature.  Then, gently push the bird feeder out from the cookie cutter.  Add a small piece of twine to each one and then have your kids help you hang them in your trees!

Over the next few days and weeks, enjoy all the birds that come and dine on your cookie cutter bird feeders!

Cookie Cutter Bird Feeder Tips:

A few tips to make this easy kids craft go as smoothly as possible:

Cookie Cutter Bird Feeders - Easy Craft For Kids | Frugal Fun Mom
  • Make sure you straw holes are not too close to any cookie cutter edge so that the twine doesn’t break right through it and cause your cookie to fall right out of the tree (a few of our did this – which made us sad).
  • Make sure your straw holes go all the way through the cookie cutter.  Once they are frozen and set, it’s very hard to string a piece of twine through them if the hole is not all the way through.
  • We found that metal cookie cutters worked the best, because once they are frozen and start to warm up just a little bit, they slide right out with no problem.
  • Parchment Paper seems to work better than Wax Paper, but either will do.
  • Mini cookie cutters don’t work well, they seem to fall apart easy because it’s hard to really pack it tightly.
  • Use bigger cookie cutters if possible and really press the bird seed into them to tightly pack it. If you don’t do this, they can fall apart easy.
  • The thicker you make your cookie cutter the better it will hold together.
