3 Spooky Halloween Playdough Recipes
Let’s jump right in and get started with the boo-tastic fun! The 3 Halloween recipes that I’m going to share with you today are Franken-Lime, Candy Corn, and Dracula Dough. Eeeks! I’m sooo excited! Your kids are going to love these 3 recipes because all 3 will smell fantastic!
Plus, you will love them because they are easy and frugal to make. Each flavor has just a handful of affordable ingredients. Fingers crossed; you might just have most of the ingredients at home already in your pantry.
Let’s start with our first Halloween playdough recipe – Franken-Lime. Below is the list of supplies you’ll need to gather to make Franken-Lime Halloween playdough.
Supplies Need For Franken-Lime Playdough
- 1 Lime Koolaid Packet
- 1 Cup Flour
- 1 Tbs Oil
- ¼ Cup of Salt
- ½ Cup of Boiling Water
- Green, Black, and Silver Glitter (optional)
Steps to Make Franken-Lime Playdough
Step #1: Combine Dry Ingredients
Start out by combining all the dry ingredients – flour, salt, and Koolaid – in a bowl. Mix well.
Step #2: Wet Ingredients
Next add water and oil and stir to mix well until the dough starts to form into a ball.
Step #3: Knead
Once the dough starts to get sticky, scoop it out onto your counter and knead until it’s soft and a good playdough texture.
Step #4: Glitter
Once the dough is well combined, add glitter (optional). Do this by making a well in the center of your dough and pouring 2 Tbs of glitter onto dough and knead.
Step #5: Done!
Finally, give it a good sniff! Smells good huh?!
Don’t you just love the bright green color of this dough? Roll your dough into plastic wrap to keep it covered while you make your next flavor of dough.
How To Make Dracula Dough
Next, let’s make Dracula Dough! I love this dough because you are in control of the color – plus I love the tart cherry smell of the Koolaid – it’s fantastic.
Supplies Needed for Dracula Dough
- 1 Black Cherry Koolaid Packet
- 1 Cup Flour
- 1 Tbs Oil
- ¼ Cup of Salt
- ½ Cup of Boiling Water
- Black Gel Food Coloring
- Hot Pink Glitter (optional)
Steps to Make Dracula Dough
Step #1: Combine Dry Ingredients
Start out by combining all the dry ingredients. Add flour, salt, and Koolaid in a bowl. Mix well.
Step #2: Wet Ingredients
Next add water, oil and food coloring and stir to mix well until the dough starts to form into a ball.
Step #3: Knead
Once the dough starts to get sticky, scoop it out onto your counter and knead until it’s soft and a good playdough texture.
Step #4: Color
Work in the black food coloring as much as you want. In fact, you can even skip this step altogether if you want to keep your dough red. I liked the black food coloring and chose not to work it into the dough too much so it would have a tie dye effect.
The Black Cherry Koolaid gives the dough a fun color to begin with, so it’s up to you if you want to leave it as is or add some black food coloring to it.
Step #5: Glitter
Once the dough is well combined, add glitter (optional). Do this by making a well in the center of your dough and pouring 2 Tbs of glitter onto dough and knead. I really liked how the hot pink glitter added a fun touch to the dough – but again, it’s up to you if you want to add glitter.
Step #6: Done!
Finally, give it a good sniff! Smells good huh?!
Don’t forget to roll your dough into plastic wrap to keep it covered while you make your final flavor of Halloween playdough.

How to Make Candy Corn Halloween Playdough
Our final flavor of Halloween Playdough is Candy Corn. You’ll love the vanilla scent of this dough and the fun colors!
Supplies Needed for Candy Corn Playdough
- Vanilla Extract (I like this Vanilla best)
- 1 Cup Flour
- 1 Tbs Oil
- ¼ Cup of Salt
- ½ Cup of Boiling Water
- Orange and Yellow Gel Food Coloring
Steps to Make Candy Corn Playdough
Step #1: Combine Dry Ingredients
Start out by combining all the dry ingredients – flour and salt – in a bowl. Mix well.
Step #2: Wet Ingredients
Next add water and oil until the dough starts to form into a ball.
Step #3: Knead
Once the dough starts to get sticky, scoop it out onto your counter and knead until it’s soft and a good playdough texture.
Step #4: Divide Your Dough
Divide your dough into 3 equal parts.
Step #5: Color
Set aside one part of your dough. Then add 1 drop of yellow gel food coloring to one part of your dough. Knead in the color and if you don’t want to get food coloring on your fingers make sure to wear gloves. Keep kneading your dough until that part is all yellow.
Next, do the same thing with the 3rd part of your dough. This time add 1 drop of orange gel food coloring and knead the dough until it’s fully colored.
Step #6: Done!
Now you should have 3 separate and equal size balls of dough – one is yellow, one is orange, and one is white. Together you have candy corn colors. Now if you can find a triangle cookie cutter, you can make little candy corns out of your dough!
Halloween Cookie Cutters
When playing with your Halloween playdough, it’s always fun to try and find some Halloween shaped cookie cutters. Starting in August most stores start stocking their shelves with Halloween stuff – so check Walmart or your local grocery store for some shapes to use.
If you just so happen to have a 3D printer, then go ahead and print out some fun Halloween shapes like a bat, Frankenstein, and a candy corn shape.
That’s it! Halloween playdough is so much fun to make and play with. Your kids will love it! Plus, you can include your kids in every step of the process. Have them help you not only make the Halloween playdough, but then let them spend some time playing with the dough once you are done.
When To Use Playdough
I know sometimes it’s not as fun to have your kids help make stuff with you. If you just aren’t feeling them today, then go ahead and prepare all 3 recipes with they are napping, wrap each flavor of dough in plastic wrap and wait until they get up to let them play with it.
Playdough is the perfect activity to let your kids do during that pre-dinner slump when you need them to stay occupied while you start to prepare your meal.
How to Store Your Playdough
Playdough can be stored in many different ways, but the very best way we have found to store playdough so that is doesn’t dry out is in mini 2oz sauce cups. You’ll need 4-5 sauce cups for each flavor of dough you make. You can find them at Walmart or you can get them on Amazon.
If you don’t want to store your playdough in sauce cups, you can also wrap the entire ball of dough in plastic wrap and then place inside a ziplock bag.
Perfect for Party Favors
Playdough is perfect to give out as a party favor, especially if you are having a Halloween party or a Halloween themed birthday party! You can give each child an assortment of the flavors in sauce cups, along with a bunch of candy, as their party favor or goody bag.
The moms of all your guests will love you because you are not giving their child a bag of useless junk, but instead something they can use.
Use At A Halloween Party
Not only is playdough great as an afternoon activity to do with your kids, but it’s also great to use as main activity at your next party! Especially is you are throwing a Halloween party for your child and all his friends.
