Everyone Must Wear A Face Mask

Let’s jump in! Today the CDC announced that they would like all Americans to wear a face mask when they leave their homes.  All of us.  Even if you are not sick.  Woah!  I freaked out for a minute.  Let me share a secret with you – I can’t sew.  I wish I could, but I don’t know how.

I Can’t Sew A Face Mask

Because I can’t sew, I set out to figure out how to make my own, no sew DIY face mask.  I started poking around a bit online and saw an idea to use hair ties and a bandana.  So, I gave it a try.  Ouch!   My ears turned red after a few seconds.  Maybe I have really strong hair ties, but those hurt my ears really bad.

I knew this was not going to work – at least not for an extended amount of time.  I was picturing myself walking around the grocery store trying to purchase groceries, and I knew I would never be able to wear a face mask using pony tail hair ties for very long.

Rainbow Loom Bands To the Rescue

I started thinking about other ideas.  I didn’t have any elastic laying around the house, but then I had a great idea.  What about Rainbow Loom bands?!  My kids have tons of those bands laying around!

If you don’t have a Rainbow Loom or Rainbow Loom Bands, consider getting one for your kids! There are so many great projects you can make out of a Rainbow Loom!

I put my daughter to work and she made a simple single band Rainbow Loom bracelet in just a few minutes.  Just big enough to fit around my ears.  She made two of them for me and this was perfect!  They were not too tight, and they fit comfortably around my ears!  The best part, you can make them as big as you need, to have as much stretch as you need!

Taking The Face Mask To The Next Level

After we made ear hooks, we decided to take it to the next level – just to make sure the mask did not fall off!  My daughter made an extra rainbow loom single band bracelet and we hooked it to the ear loops so that it would go around the back of your head.

Like a head band, but for the back of your head, instead of the top of your head.  Again, this was awesome!  It worked great and definitely held the mask in place!

Below are step-by-step photo instructions on how to make your own no sew DIY face mask using rainbow loom bands and a bandana.  Super quick, easy, and frugal!  Plus, you can get your kids to help!

Step #11: Add A Headband

This step is optional. You can either wear your mask with or without the headband. We found that the headband helped the mask stay in place much better. It’s up to you.

Using the third Rainbow Loom bracelet, add it to each end of the current ear loops so it can wrap around the back of your head. This band is optional, but it sure helps hold the face mask in place.
