Koolaid = Vibrant Colors
Not only does Koolaid Playdough smell great, it also colors the dough very well and makes very vibrant colors. Just make sure you pick the flavors that have bright colors.
If you want vibrant colors for your dough, stay away from some of the pink and yellow flavors – like lemonade and strawberry lemonade. The actual Koolaid powder is a muted shade and doesn’t make the dough a very vibrant color. Of course, if you don’t mind your dough having a muted color, then you can use any flavor!
All the Koolaid flavors smell great – you can be assured of that! I think the best flavors for both color and smell are Cherry, Berry Blue, Grape, Lemon-Lime (this one gives a great green color), and Orange. If you use all of these you will have red, blue, purple, green, and orange playdough.
Koolaid Playdough Recipe:
- 1 cup of flour
- 1/4 cup of salt
- 1 packet of Koolaid
- 1/2 cup of boiling water
- 1 Tbsp of vegetable oil
- 2 oz. plastic sauce cups with lids
Instructions:
This recipe makes one color of playdough. You will need to mix the same ingredients for each color you want to make in a separate bowl.
Start by mixing all the dry ingredients together in a bowl with a mixing spoon. Add the oil and boiling water and mix well until dough starts to form.

Allow your dough to cool before handling (this should only take a few minutes). Once the dough is cool, continue mixing until all the ingredients are well mixed.
If the dough is really sticky, add a few tablespoons of flour and mix well. If the dough is crumbly and not sticking together well add just a little bit of water and mix well.
Finally, go ahead and play with your playdough! It smells great huh?! See…I told you it would!
Koolaid Playdough + Birthday Parties = Fun!
Koolaid Playdough is the perfect activity to do with your party guests while you are waiting for everyone to arrive for the party. As kids begin showing up, have a table ready with some playdough to keep them busy until all the guests get there. Not only will they have fun, but it will keep the kids busy so they don’t trash your house!
Storage Tips For Koolaid Playdough
Store your Koolaid Playdough in an air tight container, or it will dry out. I found really nice mini 2oz plastic sauce cups with lids on Amazon – that work perfect for dividing up the dough and giving it as gifts to friends and family!
Gift Giving Ideas
We made 6 colors and divided them up and stacked them into a tower and wrapped them up with tissue paper and gave as birthday gifts and Christmas gifts to our friends!
We also kept some for ourselves to play with! Koolaid playdough makes for wonderful homemade gifts that any child would love!
