Why Tic Tac Toe?
Wondering why I’m showing you how to make outdoor Tic Tac Toe? Honestly, I don’t know! I like the game, and while I was out on a walk with my kids last week, I noticed a lot of chalk drawings in the neighborhood.
One house had a big Tic Tac Toe game board drawn on the driveway, and although I don’t know what they used for game pieces, it still got me thinking about some fun ways to play outdoor Tic Tac Toe with my own kids.

Outdoor Tic Tac Toe is also an excellent birthday party activity to do with your guests! Perfect for a Chalk It Up Party, or as an activity to add on to any kids birthday party.
Crayon Plate Toss Tic Tac Toe is a perfect activity to do while you wait for all the guests to arrive at your party, and the best part, it keep the kids entertained outside – instead of running crazy through your house!
You can match Tic Tac Toe to any party theme you are planning by naming it to go along with your theme. For example if you are having a Hot Wheels themed party, you can call it Wheel Toss Tic Tac Toe!
3 Easy Ways To Make Outdoor Tic Tac Toe For Kids
We came up with 3 very easy ways to make outdoor Tic Tac Toe for kids with supplies you probably already have at home – which means, you can stop what you are doing right now and make these 3 fun versions of outdoor Tic Tac Toe right now!
- Sharpie Rock Tic Tac Toe
- Pinecone Vs. Rock Tic Tac Toe
- Crayon Plate Toss Tic Tac Toe
How To Make Sharpie Rock Tic Tac Toe
In order to make Sharpie Rock Tic Tac Toe, you only need a few supplies and your kids! Once you gather all your supplies, you can easily make your game and can have a blast playing!
Supplied Needed:
- 10 Small Flat Rocks
- 2 Sharpie Markers (different colors)
- Quart Size Ziplock Bag
All you need to do is collect 10 small flat rocks. Have your kids help by drawing “x’s” on 5 of them and “o’s” on the other 5 with 2 different colors of Sharpie markers. Then draw a game board on the Ziploc bag. That’s it!
Now you have a quick and easy Tic Tac Toe game that you can take outside to play, or grab pretty much anytime you are on the go!
Take the game to an older child’s baseball game to keep the younger kids occupied, or to the park for the older kids to play while the younger kids ride on the swings. The best part is that the game is contained in a Ziplock bag so you won’t lose the pieces and that makes it super easy to grab and go!
Supply Alternatives:
If you don’t have Sharpie markers in different colors, you can just use Crayola markers, or even consider painting the rocks. You could also use stickersr or wrap the rocks in different colors of tape or ribbons. Anything you can think of to “color” the rocks will work! Ask your kids for ideas too!
You also don’t have to use a Ziploc bag – you can use an old sock, or a cute little canvas bag, or even a Tupperware dish. Keep it frugal by using what you already have and little creativity!

How To Make Pinecone Vs. Rock Tic Tac Toe
This version of outdoor Tic Tac Toe is really fun too! Again, you need to go on a little nature walk and find some of the supplies. Gather up the kids and take a little walk around your neighborhood to see if you can find rocks and pinecones. Then head home and make this second version of outdoor Tic Tac Toe for kids!
Supplies Needed:
- 1 Paper Plate
- 5 Small Flat Rocks
- 5 Pinecones
- 1 Gallon Size Ziploc Bag
- 1 Sharpie Marker
After you’ve collected 5 small flat rocks and 5 pinecones, you simply need to draw a game board on the plate with a Sharpie marker. We used the back of our plate because the front had a very distracting design on it.
After you’ve drawn the game board, go ahead and play! One child uses rocks and the other child uses pinecones! When you are all done, simply pack everything up in your big Ziploc bag and again you can take it with you next time you run out!
Supply Alternatives:
If you can’t find pinecones, use sticks, bark, etc. Whatever you can find in your neighborhood! Your game board can be made from a piece of construction paper or use the cardboard from the cereal box you just finished. Whatever you have will work! Again, just get creative and ask your kids for help – I’m sure they are full of great ideas!
Crayon Plate Toss Tic Tac Toe
Of the 3 versions we made, this one was the favorite of my kids! Mine too! It’s very fun to play! For this version of outdoor Tic Tac Toe, you will only need a few supplies, that I’m hoping you already have at home, and you also need the kids to help make this one!
Grab your kids, gather the supplies below and then I’ll share how to make Crayon Plate Toss Tic Tac Toe.
Supplied Needed:
This outdoor Tic Tac Toe for kids takes a little more work to make, but it’s very fun for kids to help with! Take the 10 plates and divide them into two groups of 5 plates. It’s time to make your design on the plates.
The next step is when you get the kids involved. Choose 2 crayon colors and have your kids color all the minus sign plates the same color and all the plus sign plates a different color. Once you have the plate all colored, peel the tape off leaving a sign that is not filled with color. Pretty neat huh?!
We chose to make plus and minus signs because making “o’s” out of tape is really hard. Put tape across the plate to make a minus sign. Then using the other 5 plates make plus signs out of tape.
How To Play Crayon Plate Toss Tic Tac Toe
Now, go outside and draw a game board with sidewalk chalk. If your kids are older, draw 2 lines on each side of the game board that they must stand behind when they attempt to toss their plates on to the game board. Playing by having to toss the plate is one way to make the game more competitive and even more fun!
With younger kids, just simply have them walk and place their plate on the spot they want it to be played on.
The wind can be a problem for this game. We found that the plates don’t stay in place very well if there is any wind, so it’s best to play this game when it’s not windy. Or, you can simply play it inside, and use masking tape to make a game board on your carpet.
When you are all done, store your plates in a Ziploc bag. Simple, tidy and does the job! You can also grab and go with this game any time you want!
Supply Alternatives:
Use frisbees instead of paper plates, but you need at least 10. If you don’t have any sidewalk chalk, you can use masking tape instead to make a game board on your driveway.

If you don’t have any clear tape to make the signs on the plates, you can use masking tape too! I was out of masking tape when we made these, so I had to get creative and decided to use clear tape instead. It worked great too!
