Valentine’s Day On a Budget

Before I had kids, we celebrated Valentine’s Day with a fancy dinner, and flowers.  In fact, my husband was exceptional about planning romantic dates, that were very memorable.

Now that we have kids, it’s much harder to truly celebrate Valentine’s Day in the traditional way, without spending a lot of money on not only the date, but also the babysitter.  I don’t know about you, but when a date is super expensive, it’s just not as fun for me.

Being a stay at home mom, I’m always on a mission to save our family as much money as possible, but still taking the time to celebrate the fun things in life!  Valentine’s Day is rarely just celebrated with a date night in our house – we have opted the last few years to turn the day into a special family celebration. Where the kids get to participate and we save money by not needing a babysitter.

I love having date nights with my hubby, but I’ll be honest, we try diligently to find inexpensive ways to date each other. Going out for a fancy dinner and hiring a babysitter is not on my list of budget friendly ideas.

How to Celebrate Valentine’s Day As a Family

Keep it Simple

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make a day meaningful.  You also don’t need to spend a lot of time and energy on planning Valentine’s Day either.   I mean, I know you are a busy mom.   The last thing you need is the stress of feeling like you have to plan a full day of fun, just because the calendar says it’s Valentine’s Day.

Keep it very simple by planning an easy meal, simple décor, and a game, and that’s it!  That’s all you need, and I promise your kids will love it!

Easy Food Ideas

Plan very simple food by picking an effortless menu.  If it were me, I’d do something very easy like breakfast for dinner, or pizza.  Both are super easy, and most kids love them!

If you choose to do pizza, just shape the dough into a heart and add your own toppings.  Super cute, and will look adorable! You can even consider making small mini heart shaped pizzas so everyone can have their own and add their own toppings.

I’ve even used biscuit dough as a pizza crust. It’s super easy, especially when you are pressed for time.  Just give each child an uncooked biscuit and they add their own toppings.  You can even try shaping the biscuit into a heart first!

Heart Shaped Bacon?!

Heart shaped bacon?! What? Yes – yummy! Share on X

You can also consider making breakfast for dinner, or instead, just have a breakfast celebration! Our family celebrated Valentine’s Day this year by enjoying brunch.  It was lovely!  We enjoyed heart shaped pancakes and heart shaped bacon.   Both were very easy to make, and I promise you can find a ton of ideas on Pinterest if you need help.

For the bacon I found this idea from my friends at TheDIYLIghthouse. I just tried my best to shape the bacon into a heart and baked it in the oven for 20 minutes at 350 degrees.  They looked pretty good and were super tasty.

Making the heart shaped pancakes was a lot more complicated.  I tried to use a cookie cutter – but the batter kept sticking to the cookie cutter. When we tried to flip them, the pancake didn’t want to release from the cookie cutter.  If you know a trick to this, comment below and let me know!

Needless to say, we abandoned that idea and just used an ice cream scoop to pour out the batter, and draw a heart right on the skillet.  After I finished making all the pancakes, I wish I would’ve thought to add pink and red food coloring to the batter first, so the hearts would be colored – but I will next time!

Simple Valentine’s Day Decorations

Decorations don’t have to complicated or take long to make.  I love to make décor that I use again the next year, to save time and money!  I have 2 simple Valentine’s Day decorations that I’ve used year after year, and think are adorable.

Before I share these easy décor items, something you should consider, to keep your costs down, is to only decorate one room.  You do not need to decorate the whole house!  I usually just decorate our kitchen table, and it still creates a festive feeling!

Cute Heart Banner

My 2 favorite decorations items I use every year are, a cute heart banner that I got from my friends at Crafts Unleashed, and extra hearts for my table.  For the banner, I simply printed them and cut out all the hearts.

Then I reinforced the banner by gluing the hearts to a big piece of pink poster board, and cut them out again with a small pink border.  You can also just print out the hearts on white cardstock and save the extra step of needing to glue them to poster board.

After you have the hearts all cut out, punch two holes in each heart and string them together with ribbon.  Super cute, simple, and very cheap!  After I had my banner all made, I hung it up in kitchen and I proudly use every year.

I also printed out a few extra hearts and add them to the table along with a few small boxes of Valentine conversation hearts.  That’s it!  Oh, and a lot of times my husband will buy me flowers, so those also tend to be in a vase on the table too!

If you have a few extra dollars, consider going to Walmart or the Dollar Tree and buying some cute Valentine paper plates.  Keep it simple, and cheap and I promise it will still be festive!  Your family will love it!
