If you need to get back on track with your goals, then you’ll love these great ideas of how to do that. We know staying on track with your goals is hard so don’t miss our steps to get back on track with your goals.
It’s officially February and typically that is when a lot of people have already given up on the new goals they set. In fact, 92% of people give up on their goals long before they even get close to achieving them. It’s a staggering percentage of people that give up way before they should, but I can tell you that I understand.
Goals are so hard. They are hard to set and hard to tackle. I always used to hate setting goals because I hated even more when I would fail at them. But keep reading to learn how to get back on track with your goals if you too already find yourself struggling this year.

It’s Easy To Get Off Track With Your Goals
If you want to know how to get back on track with your goals, then let me first share a story with you of how my son is learning all about goals and just how easy it is to get off track with your goals, and it all happened, just this morning. He had a complete meltdown.
Here’s What Happened….
My youngest son (he’s 11) has had a really hard year since my dad died in December 0f 2021. He’s been learning a lot about himself, and how his emotions can get really BIG. He’s in counseling and has made a lot of progress, but a few weeks ago he had a complete meltdown before school.
He practically crawled into the kitchen that morning, dragging himself, claiming he was not feeling well. Of course, I immediately checked his temp, looked him over, and went through my mental list of all the things I had to do today and didn’t really want to cancel, in order to keep him home from school.
Nothing Was Really Wrong
Thankfully, no temp, and honestly, nothing was really wrong.
I told him to eat breakfast and drink a big cup of water. Which he begrudgingly did. He just said he didn’t feel “right.”
I’ve learned a lot about him in the past year. He has a lot of feelings and is learning to process and understand them. His body often reacts long before his brain lets him know what is really going on. We’ve also learned this past year that he hates change, just like me.
A Complete Meltdown
Then it hit me.
He was having an emotional meltdown.
You see, he made some decisions over Christmas break to try to truly pull himself out of his depression. He made a list of goals he wanted to do to finally get back to himself, and he started putting maximum effort into those goals since January 2nd.
Things like doing a daily Bible reading (on his own he decided he wants to do a Read The Bible In A Year program), running 10 miles a week (which breaks out to 2 a day because he only wants to run 5 days a week), doing a soccer workout on his new Dribble Up program, and also reading 30 minutes a day.
Those 4 things are BIG changes to make, and he threw all his gusto at them and has done a fantastic job at achieving them since January 2nd.

And yet , only 10 days later, he hit a wall.
He Hit A Wall
And once I was able to tell him this, he cried and cried and cried – sloppy tears into his Cherrios. I gave him a huge hug and let him cry, and then told him he was doing an excellent job and that I was so proud of him.
He cried even more.
But, he then said, “Mom, you are so right. I’m not sick. I feel so much better. Let’s tell Dr. B about this at our next counseling session.”
And then he happily got ready for school.
Time To Re-evaluate Your Goals
So let me ask you, have you hit a wall too? All those new goals you set for yourself at the beginning of January, are you ready to throw in the towel on them?
If you are, just know I understand (and so does my son).
I can also tell you that you are normal too. Feeling ready to throw in the towel just a few days or weeks after making big changes is normal. Change is HARD! Trust me, I know – which is why I try to avoid it as much as possible.
Sometimes though, all you might need is someone, anyone, to notice the effort you are putting towards these new goals you are going after.
Steps To Take To Get Back on Track With Your Goals
Here’s what I want you to do in order to get back on track with your goals:
- Give yourself a moment to scream, or cry, or yell, or turn on some of your favorite loud music and run around your house.
- Then, give yourself a big dose of GRACE.
- Space is the next thing you need. Give yourself space from your goals for a couple hours. Set them aside.
- After some time, go back to them and think about your goals and how they make you feel. Did you bite off too much? Or are you uncomfortable because you are stretching yourself?
- Revise your goals if you need to, but don’t forget to also PUSH yourself.
- Then, get back to it! You can achieve big things!
